An American Marriage (Oprah’s Book Club)

An American Marriage (Oprah’s Book Club) is a fictional novel. It is written by Tayari Jones. She is an American academic and author who is best known for her An American Marriage novel. Leaving Atlanta is another exciting novel by the author and so is her Silver Sparrow.

The audio narration of Tayari Jones’s novel is done by Sean Crisden and Eisa Davis. They both did a great job of breathing life into the characters.

Roy and Celestial were newlyweds who were the embodiment of both the new South and the American Dream. Roy was a young and bright executive while Celestial was an artist right at the edge of a promising career. But just as they settled down within their regular life routine, they were both shattered apart by circumstances that neither of them imagined. Roy got arrested and was sent to prison for 12 years. It was for a crime that Celestial believed he never committed.

Celestial was fiercely independent and she discovered herself to be unmoored and bereft. She found solace in Andre, who was her best friend from childhood and also the best man at her wedding. Just as the time of Roy passes into the prison, she became weaker n holds backing on to her love for Roy which always had been her center. After a period and jail sentence of five years, their conviction of Roy all of a sudden got overturned and he was released from prison. He returned to Atlanta to resume his life once again with Celestial which they left five years ago under tougher circumstances.

An American Marriage novel by the author became the Oprah’s Book Club Selection in 2018. It also won the Women’s Prize in 2019 in the fiction category.
