The Drunken Botanist

The Drunken Botanist is a nonfiction book which is about the plants that create the world’s greatest drinks. It is written by Amy Stewart. Stewart is an American writer who is best known for her books about the natural world , and horticulture. You can also listen to Dear Miss Kopp from her. Besides that, you can check out Kopp Sisters in March.

Coleen Marlo is the narrator of this book. She is a terrible choice for this book. She mispronounces a plethora of words, especially those of foreign languages. Some of these flaws can be forgiven, but she isn’t helping herself. Her performance lacks energy , and enthusiasm. She also speaks monotonously.

If we notice, we find out that every great drink came from a plant. Sake started with a grain of rice. Barley gave rise to Scotch. When medieval physicians boiled juniper berries along with wine, gin was born. They only intended to create a concoction to treat stomach pain, but inadvertently invented a timeless drink.

This book covers the botanical history, fascinating chemistry, , and the puzzling science behind more than 150 plants, trees, flowers, , and fruits. Drinks have been an integral part of history. Molasses was an important part of American independence while helped kindle the American Revolution. Captain Cook created a drink rich in Vitamin-C that helped cure scurvy. Besides that, we see countless examples of how drinks have been a part of our history for as long as we can remember.

This book is filled with interesting information , and covers a variety of plants. It is a great read for the avid gardeners out there. It can teach a lot of things even to other normal people. It would be a good audiobook if not for the subpar narration.
