The Last Stand of Fox Company

The Last Stand of Fox Company is a history book on America. It tells a true story of the combat of US Marines. The author of this book is Tom Clavin and it has contributions from Robert Dury’s account with all his adventures in the 18th century.

Robert Dury was an English sailor and got shipwrecked on Madagascar Island at the age of 17 only. He remained trapped there for 15 years. Tom Clavin on the other side is the author who brought this marvelous true tale to the audience. The Heart of Everything That Is is another book from the author which you might like. Moreover, Blood and Treasure is another considerable title from the author.

The audio narration of The Last Stand of Fox Company is done by Michael Prichard. The performance was poor and due to that, it became hard to follow the book.

It was November of 1950 in the Korean Peninsula where this book is set. After all the warnings of Genera MacArthur were ignored then his 10K First Division Marines discovered themselves outnumbered by 100K Chinese soldiers. It all happened near the Chosin Reservoir. The only chance for their survival was actually to fight their way towards the south which goes through the Toktong Pass. It was a very narrow gorge somewhere in the Nangnim Mountains. It is required to be kept open at any given cost.

Captain William Barber was assigned with that mission along with the 246 Marines of the Fox Company. This one was highly courageous but at the same time, an undermanned unit of marines. Barber along with his men was ordered for climbing atop seven miles which was a completely frozen terrain. The target was the rocky promontory which was overlooking the pass. The Marines had absolutely no way of knowing that their ground under their occupation would soon be dubbed Fox Hill which will be surrounded by 10K Chinese soldiers.

The content of this book is excellent. It was the poor narration with mispronounced English and Korean words in abundance which made it hard to follow.
